Information about the Study in Mexico Program
Adams State College provides students and community members the opportunity to study Spanish in an intensive, home-stay immersion program in Mexico .

    • Features of the Program
      • The program takes place during the month of June. (Two and three week options are also available.)
      • The program is held in Guanajuato, Mexico , located one-half hour from Leon in central Mexico.
      • Participants fly to Mexico with Dr. Grace E. Young, Professor of Sociology at Adams State College, ES 316, 719-587-7142.
      • Participants can receive 7 total possible credit hours from ASC – 3 Sociology credits at the 300-level and 4 credits in Spanish (level depends on individual student's ability). A student must stay the whole month to receive the Sociology credits, and there are written requirements that accompany these credits. A student can receive 2 ASC credits in Spanish if they stay 2 weeks and complete the classroom requriements. The amount of Spanish credit increases by the number of weeks, 3 ASC credits in Spanish for a 3 week stay, and 4 ASC credits in Spanish for the whole month stay.
      • Participants live in families where meals, a room (extra charge for a private room), and transportation to and from the airport of León from which we arrive and depart, are provided.
      • Participants attend the Instituto Miguel de Cervantes in Guanajuato, which provides all levels of Spanish classes, from beginner to advanced. Average class size is 5 students. Classes are taught by Mexican instructors in Spanish.
      • Classes are held Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with the option of afternoon private classes (for extra charge).
      • The Instituto has been in operation since 1981 and has a reputation as an excellent Spanish language institute. The Institute provides evening activities such as dancing and museum visits and weekend excursions to nearby artisan sites and archaeological ruins.
      • Participants are required to take a one-credit Enrichment Course SOC 279 “The Foreign Study Experience” during the Spring semester to prepare for the trip.
      Cost
      • The cost of the program ranges from $1,600 for a participant who is only staying two weeks and not seeking any ASC credits to $2,660 for a participant who is staying for one month and is seeking 4 ASC credits in Spanish and 3 ASC credits in Sociology. This includes all costs (flight, meals, lodging, Spanish instruction), except for spending money.

      Students Fly into Leon, Mexico with Professor Grace Young. The host families pick us up and drive us to their homes in Guanajuato, Mexico, about 30 minutes away.

      Guanajuato, Mexico is a city rich in history and culture, located about 2 hours northwest of Mexico City.

      Class size is small with no more than six students to one teacher.

      Guanajuato's central plaza is beautiful and provides an excellent location for an active street life.

      There are lots of opportunities for hikes in the mountains surrounding the city, which sits in a valley.
