Hiking, Camping, and Backpacking

Hoffman, Gary. Hiking With Your Dog: Happy Trails: What You Really Need to Know When Taking Your Dog Hiking or Backpacking. 2nd ed. Merrillville, IN: ICS, 1997.

Based on his own experiences backpacking with a dog, Hoffman has written an informative book covering training, equipment, weather, first aid, and more. The first edition was titled Happy Trails for You and Your Dog: What You Really Need to Know When Taking Your Dog Hiking or Backpacking. Either edition is highly recommended.

Richmond, Mardi, and Melanee L. Barash. Ruffing It: The Complete Guide to Camping with Dogs. Loveland, CO: Alpine, 1999.

Ruffing It covers camping from the comfort of recreational vehicles to the ruggedness of backpacking. The authors also cover traveling with dogs to the chosen location whether by car, airplane, train, or bicycle. Experienced campers may pick up a few useful tips, but the books will be especially useful for those new to camping with their dogs. Highly recommended.

Smith, Cheryl S. On the Trail with Your Canine Companion: Getting the Most Out of Hiking and Camping with Your Dog. New York: Howell, 1996.

Smith has experience both camping and hiking with canine companions. She provides information on packing, car sickness, hazards of the trail, campground guidelines, and more. Highly recommended.
